Vara Lakshmi Vratham

By: Vasanthi Sri Kanes

Varalakshmi Vratha or Vratham is a popular ritual observed by married women in South India and Maharashtra. Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity – is worshipped on this day. In 2009, the date of Varalakshmi Vratam is July 31.
Varalakshmi literally means the boon granting goddess. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength.

Varalakshmi Vratham Myth

According to Hindu mythology, once Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about a vratha that will be beneficial to women. Lord Shiva then mentioned the importance of Varalakshmi Vratha. The conversation on Varalakshmi Vratha between Parvati and Shiva takes place in the Skanda Purana.
To illustrate the importance of the Vratha, Lord Shiva narrates the story of Charumati. Pleased with Charumati’s devotion to her husband and family, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and asked her to perform the Varalakshmi Vratha. The pious Charumati invited all her neighbors, friends and relatives and performed the Varalakshmi puja as directed by Goddess Lakshmi. Soon after the puja, all the people who participated in the puja where blessed with wealth and prosperity.

According to another Hindu legend, the origin of Varalakshmi Vratha is associated with a game of dice played between Lord Shiva and Parvati. Goddess Parvati who was winning all the games was accused of cheating by Lord Shiva. So they decided to appoint Chitranemi, a gana of Shiva, as the umpire. Chitranemi ruled in favor of Lord Shiva and this angered Goddess Parvati who cursed him to be a leper. Shiva asked Parvati to forgive Chitranemi and she agreed to revoke the curse if he watched Varalakshmi Vratha performed by pious women. The tradition of Varalakshmi Vratha started from then onwards.

Clean the house on Thursday with water .On Thursday evening choose a clean corner of the living room and placed a small short wooden table facing East.
over the table spread a new pink/Red silk cloth or simply draw a Lotus kolam with rice flour.
Above the silk cloth/ kolam spread a plantain leaf (tip portion) .If you cannot get a plantain leaf buy a new dinner plate and use it instead .Spread 1 cup of rice mixed with turmeric above the leaf/plate.
Place kumkum, turmeric , banana, betel leaf in the edges.

People wake up early in the morning on Friday and take a bath. Traditionally speaking the waking up time for the puja is the brahma muhurtham. Then the designated puja area and house is cleaned well and a beautiful ‘kolam’ or rangoli is drawn on the intended place of puja.
Next is the preparation of the ‘kalasham or kalash.’ A bronze or silver pot is selected and is cleaned thoroughly and a swastika symbol is drawn and is smeared with sandalwood paste..Mix turmeric powder 1 tbsp with 2 cups of rice (Raw rice ..not par-boiled). Be legible in having this rice because it is very very auspicious rice and we are going to use it year round. Put the rice inside the clean kalasam.
place some coins, one lemon, flower petals ,a small picture of Mahalakshmi, a turmeric clad thread with 9 knots and some gold jewels inside the kalasam.
Arrange some mango leaves on the kalasam .(see image)
coat a coconut with turmeric paste and place it above the kalasam
Take a pair of gold ear rings and pierce them to the coconut’s top (kudimi).
If you are lucky enough to get a face image of Mahalakshmi then stick it to the coconut’s side.
Now you have incarnated Mother Lakshmi in the kalasam.
Decorate the kalasam with flowers .Use your imagination.some people make plaits and decorate the Mother with lot of flowers.Prepare nonbu kayiru as demonstrated and place it in pooja.(There is no restriction in this pooja , even simple flowers and chanting the mother’s name will please Her.)
Then light the lamps , dhoop sticks and sing Mahalaksmi’s songs

Then Whole heartedly request her to come .
This is called the pooja of inviting the Mother Lakshmi.
Just let one tiny light bulb shine all over the night. The kalasham pot is filled with raw rice or water, coins, a single whole lime, five different kinds of leaves, and beetle nut. The items used to fill the kalasham vary from region to region and includes turmeric, comb, mirror, small black bangles and black beads.
On the pooja day:

Next morning before Raghu Kalam carefully take the kalasam to the pooja room.

In some areas, women place a mirror behind the kalasham. Today, there are also specially made Varalakshmi pots available in the market. The kalasham is usually placed on a bed of rice. First Lord Ganesha is worshipped. Then begins the Varalakshmi Puja. The puja consists of singing slokas dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi like the Lakshmi Sahasranamam. Arati is performed on the kalasham. Different types of sweets are offered. Some people offer pongal. In some areas women tie yellow thread on their hands.

The woman who is observing the Varalakshmi Puja abstains from eating certain kind of food and this varies from region to region. In some regions, women fast till the puja period.

Thamboolam –Make Thamboolam for the married women coming for the pooja.
Buy small plates or betel leaves for base.
Place one nonbu kayiru in each Kungumam, turmeric powder, a fruit, betel leaves, paakku, glass bangles, or any small gifts.
Place these thamboolams around the kalasam.
The next day, that is on Saturday, after taking a bath the kalasham is dismantled and the water in the kalasham is sprinkled in the house. If rice is used then it is mixed with rice in the house.

There are no hard and fast rules in performing the Varalakshmi Puja and you can be flexible on the puja items. Even a simple prayer will please Goddess Lakshmi.

• Lakshmi Ashtotram (see below ) and Lakshmi Sahasranamam

Food That Can be eaten on Puja day

Varalakshmi Nombu Saradu or thread
• Yellow thread is prepared with nine knots and flower is placed in the center. It is tied on the right hand.
Other important things to remember

Finally, start the preparation on Thursday itself. Arrange and purchase all the things that are needed a day before the puja.

• Fragrant leaves
• Betel leaves
• Betel nuts
• Banana leaf with tip or a tray

For making ‘Prasad’ or offering - Usually sweets this depends on the person’s ability. There are a lot of varieties of sweets that are made. The preparation begins on Thursday.

If you want to strictly follow all the rules and methods of Varalakshmi Puja, then it is wise to take the advice from an elderly woman who is regularly performing the puja.
Always remember rituals should not be a trap. It should only be a helping step in realizing the ultimate truth. A simple flower offered with devotion is far better than elaborate showy rituals.

Varamahalaxmi Vrita Katha:

Suta Puranika addresses Shaunaka and other rishis thus: “Let me tell you a story about a Vrita which gives all the benefits and pleasure of this world to women. This Vrita was once narrated by Lord Parameshwara to Parvathi”.

One day Parvati Devi approaches Lord Parameshwara who is seated in a golden throne studded with jewel. She prostrates and asks him thus: “Lord, is there any way by which women in Bhuloka can attain wealth, property, progeny and be happy. Please tell me by worshipping whom, by what Vrita and also if that Vrita was performed by anybody in the past”. Parameshwar replies: “Manohari, yes there is a Varalaxmi Vrita which should be performed by women in Shravana Masa on the Friday before the full moon day of shukla paksha”. He further narrates the details of Shri Varalaxmi Vrita.

In Kundina city of Magadha Desha , there lived a pativrita saadvi by name Charumati. Everyday she woke up early in the morning, worshipped her husband with devotion, served her in-laws with respect and she remained pleasant in her manners all thru the day. One night in her dream, Charumati saw Goddess Laxmi who said “I’m Varalaxmi Devi and I’ve appeared before you as I’m extremely pleased with you. If you worship me on the Friday before Shravana Shukla Poornima, I’ll grant all your wishes”. In her dream itself, Charumati praised Varalaxmi Devi thru various stotras and says, “O Jagajjanani, only with your blessings people can become scholars, affluent and contented. It is my ‘ poorva janma sukrita’ to have you appear in my dream’. Pleased by Charumati’s humility, Laxmi showered boons on her and disappeared.

Charumati immediately woke up and explained her dream to her husband, in-laws and companions and all of them encouraged her to perform the pooja as told by the Goddess. áll of them eagerly waited for the day. On that Friday, they woke up early morning, took bath and wore silk sarees and then cleaned the whole house with ‘gomaya’, decorated the altar, placed the kalasham on the newly harvested rice, invited Goddess Varalaxmi and performed the pooja with all shraddha and bhakti. They tied the holy thread with 9 knots around their right wrist, offered various food items to the Goddess and did ‘pradakshina namaskaras’. By the time they did 3 pradakshina namaskaras, by Laxmi’s blessings, they were decked with jewels like anklets, bangles and such other ornaments studded with nine precious stones. Their houses turned gold and they possessed horses, elephants and charriots. Charumati and her companions honoured brahmins with ‘dakshina tambula’, received their blessings and ate the prasadam with reverence. Ever since, Charumati and other ladies performed this Vrita regularly and lived happily.

Lord Parameshwar concludes saying, ‘Parvati, this supreme Vrita can be performed by anybody (without the barrier of the varnas) and the performer will get all his wishes fulfilled. One who reads this story and one who listens to this story will attain success and benevolence with the blessings of Shri Varamahalaxmi”.
